How do I set up a protected text form field that allows
users to change the character format of the text they type
in the field?  Once I protect the document, it prevents
them from making font changes.

Hi Debby,

You could modify the technique in the article "How to enable the
spellchecker in a protected document" at:

http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/MacrosVBA/SpellcheckProtectDoc.htm

or, if you use a userform instead of a document with formfields, there will
be no restrictions on what the user can do

See the article "How to create a Userform" at:

http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Userforms/CreateAUserForm.htm

Please post any further questions or followup to the newsgroups for the
benefit of others who may be interested.  Unsolicited questions forwarded
directly to me will only be answered on a paid consulting basis.

Hope this helps
