noobs question - formatting and hiding fields

i have some templates i am modifying.  the data for the templates come from
a database using xml.

its in the following format

{MERGEFIELD "Client Phone Number:"  "repeater=1" "xPath=
Client\Forms\ClientPhoneNo" "TableName=" "mask=" \* MERGEFORMAT}

i want to format the darn thing to (###)###-####
i want make sure it is numeric if its not then i don t want the above
formatting and just add as it is.

please help
