Office XP, I have one user with a Word document that automatically loads data
from an Excel spreadsheet. In the past when she opened the Word doc the sheet
opened automatically, now it does not. How can I reset this so that opening
the Word doc also opens the Excel sheet in which she can make edits when
necessary?

She needs to explicitly choose DDE as the connection method. In Word 2002 and
later the default is OLE DB.

Tools/Options/General, activate "Confirm conversions on open"
Now, when she chooses the worksheet she wants to attach, she should get a list
of connection methods and can select DDE.

Note: later versions of Office show increasing problems with DDE connections.
It's not said that this will actually work on any given installation.
