Word keeps opening database

I have multiple documents which I merge to the same Access
database.  Each document I open causes the database to
open again.  Finally my computer slows down after I have
the database opened about six times, and I have to close
each of them.  There is probably a simple solution to
this, but I am not technically savvy enough to figure it
out.  Could someone please advise?  Thanks!

Not really, no. Although to what extent the problem will
occur depends somewhat on the version of Word + Access (which
you don't mention), and whether you've assigned a "friendly"
name to the Access database's title bar?

Generally, you'd be better off to use an ODBC connection,
rather than DDE, so that the database isn't opened up at all.
This would mean you'd need to control numerical and data
formatting in a Query, or in the merge fields, however.
You'll find more information on this last point in the Mail
Merge FAQ on my website.

I realized after I submitted that I left out versions:
Access and Word 2000.  Thanks for the response, I have
another window opened to your website.

OK. If you want to try an ODBC connection (to avoid Access
being started up at all), activate the "Select method"
checkbox in the OpenDataSource dialog box, where you choose
the *.mdb file.

You'll get a list of available connection methods for the
file type; for Access in Word 2000 this should be DDE and
ODBC.

You'll find you only get the tables listed in the next
dialog box, but you can get the queries: Click "Options"
and activate "Views".

The formatting problems with numbers and dates I touched on
in my last message :-)
