If a bookmark has been created using the ask command in mailmerge, how do I
get word to insert the value stored in the bookmark anywhere in my document.

Hello Cynthia,
You need to insert the bookmark ref field into your document where you want
the data to go.
Press Ctrl + F9. This puts in the { } brackets. Just type the name of your
bookmark within the brackets. Do this for every place you want to insert the
data. Once in Press Alt + F9. This toggles all your field codes to hidden
again.
