Problems connecting to Excel data source

Using Office 2003/WinXP. Have used this mail merge for a long time connected
to the same Excel data source. Now the Word doc won't connect to the data
source. I've even tried to connect to the same Excel data source with a brand
new Word doc - it just won't connect. I get to the place to locate the data
source, select the file and then it just stops - no errors, but it doesn't
give me the option to select the fields from the file. Changed the setting in
Word to prompt for conversion options and have tried all of them DDE, etc.
but still same thing. Any other suggestions?

Have you tried connecting your Word document with a completely new Excel
data source that has the same columns as the existing source? If that works,
it suggests that the existing Excel source document is probably corrupt and
you may need to re-construct it. If it doesn't work, it sounds as if
something more serious has happened to Excel - it might be worth checking in
an Excel group for ideas before, e.g. making sure you have yourOffice setup
CDs and using the Check and Repair option.
