For some reason, when I use my mouse wheel, occassionally
it scrolls horizontally instead of vertically. I've tried
finding settings in word to control that but cannot. Is
there some place I can go to to tell Word, "No!"?

This will not be a Word issue, but a mouse driver issue. Check the mouse
driver scroll options.
