I get distracted by the fat flashing curor in Word.  Does
anyone know how to stop it flashing?  Maybe change it into
a different symbol that's recognisable (so that you know
where you are in the document) but that doesn't flash?

The cursor should be a thin flashing bar - Check Windows accessibility
options > display.
