How to have a colored background for a Word document

Maybe what I want is impossible...I am using Word for our
club's newsletter & want something other than a white
background for every page.  I understand the "background"
option is for Web pages.  However cannot believe the whole
world is stuck with a white background if using Word!

I tried "insert Picture" feature first to insert the
background which I had saved in Paint as a JPEG
application.  I was then able to add my graphics, text &
border on top of my textured, colored background.

ONLY problem--I cannot get Word to continue on with a 2nd,
3rd, etc. page.  The left hand margin guide affects the
bottom edge of the colored background, moving it up or
down.

Any way to have a non-white background?  Publisher allows
me to do this but I get a white border all around the edge-
-don't want that either.

Thanks for your help!  CFB

What you want is not possible, because you cannot print to the edge of the
page on the vast majority of printers. The printer drivers simply will not
allow it. You could put a text box with a colour fill in the header for each
page, but you would be still have the problem of not being able to print to
the edge of the pages.

Why not buy some coloured paper?

Graham:  Thanks for quick reply--we don't print out our
newsletter--it's available to members on-line as a PDF
document, thusly my desire as the editor to jazz it up a
bit by having a textured background instead of white.
Just like colored stationary--but as a Word document.

Hmmmmm...seems Microsoft folks are so advanced that they'd
have thought of something like this for Word users by
now.  Oh well....

The border problem does not arise for PDF as a pdf does not have this
limitation. Setup the PDF driver as the default printer and you can fill the
header with a text box with no border, a coloured fill and set behind text.
This is exactly the same as a background.

They have finally heard our 'cries'. :-)

As of Word 2003 under Tools/Options/Print there is an option to print
"Background colors and images".

A background for a printed document is called a "watermark." Word 2002 makes
it easy to insert these (Insert | Background | Printed Watermark). For
previous versions, see Word's Help under "Create a watermark" or "HOW TO:
Create a Watermark in Microsoft Word 2000" at
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=211324
