scanning the "a" drive on open

how can i turn off the scanning of the "a" drive when
there is no disk in there.  it is really annoying when i
go to open a file!

Have you been saving or opening Word documents from floppy? This leads Word
to try to use the floppy for its temp files - with various unfortunate
results (rattling the drive being the least of them).

Try saving a document to hard disk, then exiting Word. Always work on copies
of documents on the hard disk, and copy the file to and from floppy using
Windows Explorer.

You might also want to check Tools > Optoins > File Locations to make sure
nothing is pointing to A:
