every time I make a formatting change to a word or phrase
in my documents the entire document changes to that
formatting. The only way I can undo it is to go to "edit,
undo automatic style updating" (or press Ctrl-Z).

I've gone through each element of my styles and the
"automatic style update" is not checked in any of them, nor
are any of the options under "format, autoformat, options,
autoformat" checked.

any ideas on how to stop this annoying behavior?

Thanks to you both.  The problem was that I hadn't been
able to modify the "normal" style when I was in an open
document that already had text in it(e.g., couldn't FIND
the normal style in the task pane to modify). So I opened a
new document, and went right to styles/formatting to modify
the "normal" style. I found that automatic updating was
checked -- unchecked it, added to template, and all is now
well.

I'm using Word 2003 BTW.

Hi Griffin,

Which version of Word is this? Are you sure the "automatic
update" checkbox is NOT checked for the NORMAL style? (Just
double-checking, because that's sure what it sounds like)
