I have a new PC. Old one ran Windows 98, Word 97. New one
runs Windows XP, Word 2003. ~ I have some folders with
literally hundreds of files in then, mostly very short
ones involving music performers and song titles. ~ In
Word 97, I could type a few letters of a key word, hit
enter, and get a list of only those files containing that
letter sequence. This was good and how I like it. ~ By
comparison Word 2003 has two major problems. ~ 1. I type
a few letters of the word I want and the filename is
automatically completed. If I hit Enter I get that file.
However this not good because when I typed "bai"
expecting to get a list of Baileys, the way Word 2003
works I get Mildred Bailey when I was wanting Pearl
Bailey (Mildred being the first "bai" it found, so it
autocompleted). I want to turn off this autocomplete in
the Word filename. I want it to work the way Word 97
worked. ~ 2. I have this file name of "BAILEY, Mildred."
I type in "bai" and get the file of Mildred Bailey.
However, because I typed "bai" in lowercase, my filename
has been automatically changed to "baiLEY, Mildred." I
had no intention to change the filename, just to find the
file. In Word 97, just because I searched in lowercase
the program did not see fit to change my filename. I want
this feature in World 2003 to work the same way. ~ I have
uspicion these are both related to the same feature.
Could it be something called "AutoOpen?" I found a
reference to that, but the article was about turning it
on, not off. Searches on "AutoOpen" do not turn up
anything useful. ~ If anyone answers, I would really
appreciate an e-mail reply as well as to the newsgroup.

Hi Rocky,

Try typing the few letters, followed by *.doc, then press
ENTER to get the lists that matches that pattern. Continuing
your example: bai*.doc should give you a list of doc files
that begin with those three letters.
