Hi, Rocky,
AutoOpen is a catchy name, but it's taken for something else (a macro
that Word automatically runs when you open a document). What you're
talking about is similar to the AutoComplete feature for AutoText
entries, but I don't think this really has a name.
Anyway, as far as I know you can't turn it off. And I'm not sure why
you would want to, since it's definitely a timesaver. It looks at the
names of the files in the folder that's displayed, and loads the File
Name box with the first one that matches as much as you've typed so
far. Since you can't open a file that doesn't exist in that folder --
unless you switch to another folder where it does exist -- it wouldn't
make sense to type a nonexistent name and click Open; you'll just get
an error message.
>How do I turn off AutoOpen, the feature that (I'm
>assuming) finishes the file name for you in the Open menu.

Thanks for the reply, Jay.
You hit on the problem -- it loads the filename box with
the first one that matches -- and if I want the second or
fifth I have to keep typing, or else scroll the file
list. It is only a problem on a couple of folders that
have ~1000 files (performers and titles). I want Pearl
Bailey but I get Mildred Bailey -- under Word 98 I could
just type "bai" and hit enter and get a list of all the
Baileys.
Also, when the filename is "BAILEY, Mildred" and I
type "bai" suddenly it changes my filename to "baiLEY,
Mildred" -- I hate that it changes my filename!
So, it causes me more work to get a file than it used to.
I don't mind that such features exist. I mind that they
are forced on me instead of giving me easy options to
choose to use them or not (most of the new "helpful"
options I am turning off as I stumble across the means to
do so).

Hi Rocky,
See if this works for you:
- In the Registry drill down to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\c
omdlg32
- Change "NoFileMru" to the value of 1

No Joy, Beth.
I got into the registry editor and drilled down to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersio
n\Policies -- but there was no comdlg32 there.
Only thing there was "(Default) ~ REG_SZ ~ (value not
set)"

I thought it might be os specific. What operating system are you
using?
You might try searching the Registry for "comdlg" or "NoFileMru" and
see what turns up.

Running Windows XP, and Word 2003
Okay, did the search. Search for "comdlg" turned up
several, but none seemed the right one. Only one was a
folder, that one found under...
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersio
n\Explorer\Comdlg32.
An apparent duplicate was under HKEY_USERS
Inside that were two sub-folders: LastVisitedMRU and
OpenSaveMRU. Neither had a NoFileMRU. LastVisitedMRU had
a bunch of binary codes in it. OpenSaveMRU had a bunch of
subfolders all with names of filename extensions (com dll
exe jpg, etc.). None had a NoFileMRU.
Search on NoFileMRU found nothing.

Hmmm....I also have Windows XP. Although I *do* have TweakUI
installed...Ah! it looks like it has such an option and the Reg value
is modified accordingly. :-)
Download TweakUI for Windows XP and in the Common Dialog options turn
off "Remember previously-used file names".
(sorry I didn't think of this previously!)

BINGO! That did it, Beth. You're a dear for hanging in
with me through several back-and-forth messages to get to
the bottom of that!
Although it does seem, in TweakUI, that
unchecking "Enable AutoComplete" should have been the
one -- the help says the box would "enable AutoComplete
in the 'File Name' edit box" which is what I think I was
wanting not to do -- but undoing the "previously used
file names" put it right back to the way I wanted it.
That's a slick little program ... er, "powertoy."

Hi Rocky,
You're welcome. Glad you have it sorted out. :-) (Sorry I didn't put
the two together earlier though - I'm one who typically turns to the
Registry first. <g>)
I don't see the "Enable AutoComplete" option but I suspect it is for
IE.
Out of curiosity, do you now have
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\c
omdlg32 in the Registry?
