I just bought a new computer but it does not come with
Microsoft Word. I am going to install my own version of
Word, which I also installed on my old computer.  I have
accumulated a lot of Auto Text entries and Auto Format.
How do I transfer these to the new computer.  Is there a
certain file I can back up and transfer?

Thank you!

Well, I don't understand.
I need to transfer mu AutoCorrect information from my
desktop to my laptop. The desktop has Word 2000, the
laptop Word 2002.
Can I make the transfer? How do I do it? I only got
confused by the autocorrect.dot program/info.
Could someone assume that I am a dummy and explain it
simply, please?

Hi, Howard,

Put a copy of autocorrect.dot into the Templates folder of each computer.
(The macro will run just fine in both versions of Word.)

On the desktop system, open autocorrect.dot and click the Backup button. It
will create a document containing the AutoCorrect data, and prompt you to
save it as "AutoCorrect Backup Document.doc". You can keep this name or
change it -- perhaps to add the date.  When the macro finishes, and again
displays the box with Backup, Restore, and Cancel buttons, you can click
Cancel and close the document.

Copy the "AutoCorrect Backup Document.doc" file to the laptop, using
whatever means you like -- floppy disk, CD-R, LAN, email, etc. [Note: If you
use removable media (floppy, CD), *do not* try to save directly from Word to
the floppy, or to open from the floppy directly into Word. Copy the file
from/to the hard drive. Word has problems with removable media that can
cause data corruption.]

On the laptop, open autocorrect.dot and click the Restore button. The macro
displays the Open dialog. Select the copy of "AutoCorrect Backup
Document.doc" and click the Open button. When the macro finishes, and again
displays the box with Backup, Restore, and Cancel buttons, you can click
Cancel and close the document.

When you exit Word, you may be asked whether to save changes to Normal.dot.
Say yes.

In addition to the article Doug referred you to, which deals with
AutoCorrect entries, see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/General/FilesToBackup.htm. But note that unless
the copy of Word you had on the old computer was a retail version, you
cannot legally install it on your new computer. If it was an OEM version
(came installed on the computer), it is licensed for that computer only and
may not even install on another one. And if it requires activation, you
won't be able to activate it.
