Ok. I give. What's the secret to deleting user created styles?
I've tried everything I can think of but as soon as Word is closed and
reopened the styles I deleted in the last session reappear.
This should be easy but it is not.
Are you being prompted to save Normal.dot when you quit Word? Are you saying
yes?

Yes. I'm being prompted AND I say yes to saving Normal.dot.
To elaborate on the problem. I created a new toolbar. The toolbar
contains some macros as well as a set of standardized in-house styles
for editing manuscripts (we're a publishing company).
The style tags from Word are then read by our typesetting program
(PageMaker) when the Word doc is placed in our publication files. The
style names must be EXACTLY the SAME in order for this to work without
flaw.
During this process it became apparent that the NAME of two word
styles had to be changed in order to be compliant.
I changed the style name and saved it in the template. When opening
Word I saw both the old and new style name. I can delete the old style
name. But as soon as I quit and restart Word, it is back.
Additionally, when opening Word this morning, the "normal" style in
the template reverted to Times New Roman 10 pt with no tabs, whereas
the modified style should have been Times 11 pt with 4 tab stops.
What's up?
Are the styles reappearing in a blank document? If so, you have user-created
styles stored in Normal.dot, and need to delete them there.
For more information, see
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/apperrors/BlankDocNotBlank.htm
This is about text changes to Normal.dot, but the same general principles
apply to styles.

Ah ha! THANK YOU! Editing the Normal.dot directly as that document
describes *seems* to have been the answer! Geez... it should be
simplier (read more intuitive) than that. And it would be MUCH more
helpful if Word stored the normal.dot someplace other than as a hidden
file under user names in the "documents and settings" folder...
The way Office scatters template folders all over the place is pretty
weird (and don't even get me started on the problems of using a
normal.dot from Word 2000 in Word 2002).
Now if I can only get MS to provide a patch so that the add-ins that
I'm running don't force Word into the anal-retentive need to save
normal.dot everytime I exit the program (I think it is the Dymo label
writer software that's causing this on my system... and it is NOT
something that I want to uninstall).

It won't do it automatically if you check "Prompt to save Normal
Template" on the Save page of the Options dialog box.

This isn't a Word issue - it is behaving as it should.
The problem is due to a poorly designed add-in that modifies your
Normal.dot each time Word starts. More than likely it's adding a
toolbar or menu item.
A properly designed add-in should not dirty a user's Normal.dot or at
least code it properly so Word doesn't think the Normal.dot has been
modified once the menu/toolbar item has been added. It's easy enough
to do with a simple line of code.
You should contact the manufacturer of your Dymo software - at least
let them know their add-in could use some polishing.

Yes. I have complained. As I'm certain a few other users have done.
Yet, mysteriously, it was the first time the tech I spoke with ever
heard about it. But hey, the job is probably outsourced and he's
probably at some phone bank in Asia.
Such is the state of software. MS makes its programs complicated (some
would say full-featured), then opens the doors to other developers,
who simply don't code stuff correctly.
In short: They the third party programmers whine when they are left
out, but when let in they don't follow the rules of the game.
What's a user to do.
Beth Melton - 26 Jan 2004 21:26 GMT
Do not use an add-in if it is not coded properly and tell the third
party why you are not using it.
That's what I do anyway. So far one has polished their add-in - it's a
start anyway. <g>

I'm curious: Was that one MS?

LOL
I wish! (Don't get me started on the add-in you are referring to. <g>)
In this case it was Snag-it add-in. Although I'm fairly certain I
wasn't the only one who mentioned this to them. ;-)

No, in fact Word MVP Bill Coan sent them the corrected code IIRC--or at
least specific instructions on correcting it.

I hope he gets through... I sent something like that for the "Read in
Microsoft Reader" add-in, and it never got fixed as far as I know.

He did get through. TechSmith released a revised version of SnagIt
immediately.
