When I cut from foreign source (such as an Internet page,
or a different program) I cannot paste in Word 2003
unless I have the program open first.
It is as if the act of opening Word 2003 deletes whatever
is on the clipboard, as I am able to paste my item on any
number of other programs (Excel, Quark, etc.) which were
not open beforehand, but as soon as I open Word the paste
is gone (and then I cannot paste it anywhere else
either).
This was not a problem in Word 97.

Hi Rocky,
Probably some add-in messes with the clipboard, most likely the Works
add-in.
If it is the Works add-in, you can remove it from the Windows Control Panel
> Software.
IIRC, it doesn't really serve any purpose that would atone for the troubles
it causes.
Greetings,
Klaus

That seems to have done the trick, Klaus. Thanks.
I searched around the Microsoft website to see if I could
find out what that add-in does. I could not even find any
references to it!

The Works Suite Add-in integrates some Works functionality in Word
such as:
- Works Task Launcher
- Works Templates
- Works Mail Merge functionality, (if you are using a Works Address
book)
- Word to Works converter.
That's what it was designed to do anyway. What is really does is clear
the Windows Clipboard when Word starts, cause Word to crash on exit,
dirties Normal.dot each time Word starts (and if you automatically
allow Word to save changes to Normal.dot it can lead to the corruption
of Normal.dot), over/under populates the Mail Merge command under the
Tools menu...shall I go on? <g>

There are KB articles, but they're all negative. Beth has given you a pretty
good list of the reasons for deep-sixing it.

You could try this, go to "Edit" menu, paste special, try any of the
following paste options that appear. Or its best to just open Word first
then Paste text into it from your foreign source.
