I can't keep the task pane from opening everytime I start
or open a new document. In office XP I was able to turn
this option off. Now I can't figure out how to do it in
2003. I've tried "Tools>Options>View>Show>uncheck Start
Up Task Pane" & it doesn't do the trick.
Any suggestions?

Hi Stacy,
Another issue with the task pane is if add-ins are present in one of
your Startup folders then the task pane is dismissed before Word fully
loads. I suspect third-party add-ins are incorporating a Registry hack
to keep the task pane from being dismissed when Word starts as effort
to circumvent this issue.
However the problem with the Registry hack is not all users want to
see the task pane and of course this presents another problem.

Actually, there is a add-in for removing the Task Pane Completely at start
up, here it is:
