I tried to choose borders and just a line above the text,
but when you choose text instead of paragraph it always
wants to place a box around the text. I just want a line
and not one that goes all the way across the page...just
across the selected text.
any ideas?

Jimmy,
If you want a line above a single number, word, or phrase you can use an EQ
field
For example. Use CTRL+F9 to enter field code brackets { } then
{ EQ \x\to (YourText) }
Then select, right click, and toggle field code.

As Greg says, you can use an EQ field to get a line above selected text. If
you want a border above the entire paragraph, then apply it to the paragraph
rather than the selected text.
