Spell check animation aggro

A small irritation:

I've turned off spell checking as I type, but find the little animated
scribble on the status bar still carries on, which I find incredibly
distracting... So much so that I'm driven to writing this, instead of what I
should be writing!

I can't find any way of turning this off. Is it possible? If not could there
be a little patch please which will turn it off???

So irritating that I had never noticed it, despite having used Word since
version 6 - so thanks for pointing that out. It'll no doubt irritate me too
now :(

It appears there is no way to turn it off that I can find, though if you
find it that annoying, you could turn off the status bar from tools >
options > view.

It disappears for me in Word 2003 if I disable both "Check spelling as you
type" and "Check grammar as you type."

I am downloading the latest minor update now - but there is nothing listed
that would affect this.

Nothing broken, just a minor idiosyncracy relating to the scribbling pad in
the status bar that apparently cannot be switched off - though Suzanne has
managed it.

We have already established that my computer is charmed (actually this one
and the one before it as well, in three successive versions of Word). Must
be something in the Fairhope electric current. <g> Seriously, it is really
bizarre that my version of Word always has bits that behave differently from
the rest of the world's. In Word 2002, I figured it was because I hadn't
applied the updates, but now I'm really at a loss for an explanation.

I just made a discovery.

In one document, the animation carries on. But in another, it doesn't. I
can't see any difference between the two documents, apart from content. Same
templates, same preferences etc. There just doesn't seem to by any rhyme or
reason to this! The document where the animation is switched off is a lot
bigger than the one where it continues, but other than that... God knows...!

Well, when I was checking it was in an empty document, but I just added some
lorem ipsum text (in which *every* word is misspelled!), and it still works
there. Oddly, though, I opened a 262-page document, with "Check spelling as
you type" enabled (and working), and the status bar icon is missing, so
something weird is certainly going on. If I explicitly run spelling and
grammar (F7), then the icon reappears, but it disappears if I disable CSAYT.
