I was trying to use the F4 key to Repeat Formatting (which
I thought was the default.)

When I checked on the Edit menu, the menu command was
labeled "Repeat Close", which I've never heard of.

I went to Tools/Customize/Options/Keyboard and tried to
reassign F4 to Repeat formatting, which was not an
available option. I may have cleared all. I closed the doc
and repoened. When I did, my Edit menu was gone.

Also, the top and bottom margin lines are gone, although
in Page Setup the top and bottom are 1". If you look at
the ruler on the left of the doc (the ruler you drag to
adjust top and bottom margins, it looks like the margins
are set to 0.

Any suggestions appreciated. :)

The F4 command repeats your last action, not just formatting. So if
you last closed a document then F4 will repeat the close. IOW, F4 is
functioning 'as designed'.

Regarding the lack of margins, place your mouse pointer below the
ruler and watch for the "Show white space' screen tip, then click the
mouse. You can also return the display of white space by going to
Tools/Options/View and turn on "White space between pages".

Re: F4: Doh! I'm so used to using it to repeat formatting.
If I formatted the font on some text, shouldn't the F4 key
then preat that font? It didn't: no matter what I did, it
said on the Edit menu: Repeat Close F4.

Any idea on the lost Edit menu? It's completely gone.

As for the Tools/Options?view: Of course I don't know how
I got rid of it to begin with, but I added it back. Thanks
very much!

The F4 command works on fewer actions in Word 2002 and above than it did
previously. If you change the font formatting through the Font dialog, it
will work, but not if you change the font or size through the Formatting
toolbar dropdowns.
