I somehow managed to do the Ctrl+Alt+underscore option
and it gave me this blinking underscore where my arrow
would normally be (my pointer). I didn't know how to get
rid of it, so ignored it. When I went to go use the
symbol option from the pull down menu, it disappeared!!!
I had to repeat the process to find out what keys I hit
to get the whole thing started, and now I'm down my
Wordcount (something I knew I wouldn't use). Anyone have
a solution?? THank you!

This is Word's command eraser! As you've discovered, it needs to be used
with care, if at all.
You can put things back on your menus using the Customize dialog under the
Tools menu.
When you see that big black hyphen on your screen, you can get rid of it by
pressing the Esc key.

Thanks for attending so quickly to my distress! Yes, it
was completely unintentional and it will NEVER happen
again. Scouts honor! But it's happy now, which means
I'm happy. Thanks again!

Hi Christian,
As you discovered by accident, Ctrl+Alt+Hyphen is the keyboard shortcut for
ToolsCustomizeRemoveMenuShortcut, which you can use to remove menu and
toolbar items.
It can be useful to remove items from the "File > MRU" list or the Work
menu.
If you haven't customizations of the "Tools" menu that you don't want to
loose, you can bring up the "Tools > Customize" dialog, then right-click on
the "Tools" menu, and choose "Reset".
Else, you can (also from the "Tools > Customize" dialog) go to "Categories:
All commands", and drag "ToolsWordCount" back into the "Tools" menu.

Thank you very much for your prompt and informative
response! I had a feeling that it was just a shortcut
that could be re-established, but the matter was HOW.
Thanks again for your help!
