Insert Auto Text grayed out in Header Footer toolbar

When I want to add a header or footer to a word document
I click on "VIEW" then "HEADER AND FOOTER". The Header
and Footer tool bar appears in the center of the
document. I can pick page number, date, time ect. from
this toolbar but the "Insert AutoText" choice is grayed
out and does not work. I would always use this to insert
the file name as part of the footer.

I have tried everything to figure out why this no longer
works. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get it
working again or why it may not be working?

Make sure that "Look in" in the AutoText dialog is set to "All active
templates." If it is, then you've probably managed to lose the default
AutoText entries in Normal.dot, perhaps by copying over it. You'll need to
generate a fresh copy; see
