*Many* users complained that the brackets were difficult to see (and truly
invisible if a comment was inserted at a point rather than applied to
selected text). There seemed to be universal demand for having the text
highlighted as it had been in previous versions. What you might try is this:
instead of selecting text or *not* selecting text (which has the result you
describe), select a single space at the point where you want the comment
inserted. The result is that the space has color highlighting, but no words
do; you can also experiment with different colors for the comments (this
color can be set independently of the other markup).

And then one can simply delete the space (IP in front of the space, press
DEL). The comment remains as it appeared in Word 2002.
