I can't seem to get the prograsm to accept the changes I
make in the toolbar formatting. I make changes, I close
the program and when I open it again the old buttons
reappear. How do I force Word to accept my toolbar changes
globally?

You need to ensure that normal.dot is saved when you close the program -
start by ensuring that the prompt to save normal.dot (tools > options >
save) is checked. This will not be any use if this is a company networked
machine and the IT Nazis replace the normal.dot file with a clean one each
time you log in.
