I'm using Word 2000. I have a problem with the tab stops
on my ruler "greying" out. When I open a new document the
tab stops are there but as I type the document the tab
stops grey out on the ruler bar and can't been seen
although they are actually still there. If I save and
close the document, then re-open it they tabs are still
greyed out. If I save the document and exit Word, then re-
open Wood and re-open the document, I can see the tab
stops again. I'm completely baffled - I can't find a tool
or setting which might counteract the problem. I feel it's
probably a display problem. Has anyone had the same
problem?
Does this happen when the insertion point is in a given paragraph or when
you select more than one paragraph? Word always shows settings dimmed when
they are "mixed," so if you have different tab stops in different
paragraphs, you'll get this effect (you'll also get it if you select more
than some specific but AFAIK undocumented amount of text).

No Suzanne. It is apparent as soon as a document is
opened. It's not only the tab stops which are "greyed"
out, but the tab style selection button to the left of the
ruler bar, and all the other setting shown in the ruler
(eg left and right margins, hanging indents). I've been
using Word for nearly 10 years and I've never come across
this before. I can open the same document on a different
PC and have no problem at all.

Ros

I'm stumped then. I would suggest document corruption except that it seems
to work okay on another box.

Ros,
The only thing I can think of is maybe you are working with some Word 97
compatibility settings turned on and Word thinks you're web authoring. See
