I am not able to get Word to open up by clicking directly
on the word document itself, either on my desktop or on a
network shared folder.  However, if I open Word first,
then navigate to a document on the network or on my
desktop, then the document opens up just fine.  I was not
sure if there is a setting for this or not.  Any tips
please?

You need to re-register Word by calling it from Windows > start > run with
the command line Winword /r
