Basic Normal Document template shows single spacing,
which is what I want. However it always double
spaces, when I do a modify and save it still doublespaces.
Any help would be appreciated.

Locate normal.dot (a hidden file in current versions) and rename it
oldnormal.dot. Let Word build a new one.

Also, see
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Formatting/WholeDocumentReformatted.htm and be
careful what you save to your normal.dot template in the future. You should
go under Tools > Options > Save and check the option to prompt before saving
changes to normal.dot.
