I have Word (Office 97 SBE version) installed in my XP Home. Since upgrading
my Jaws Pdf Creator software, a blue pdf icon has appeared in the Word
toolbar, and every time I copy/paste text an identical blue pdf icon pastes
instead of the text. A second copy/paste is successful. How can I resolve
this problem please?

It sounds like there is a PDF add-in that is utilizing the Windows
Clipboard to add images to menus and toolbars.

You could remove the add-in but if you are utilizing it then you need
to start Word before copying your data. Unfortunately the creator of
the add-in didn't take the user into consideration and preserve the
Windows Clipboard contents before utilizing it for the button faces.

If you wish to remove the add-in go to Tools/Templates and Add-ins and
see if there are any add-ins in the list. If so they will be located
in your Word Startup folder or Office\Startup folder. Move the add-in
out of the folder to prevent it from loading when Word starts.

The location of the Word Startup folder can be obtained by going to
Tools/Options/File Locations and the Office\Startup folder will be
located in the Office installation path. You can also use Windows
Search to locate the add-in.

If you have removed the add-in and the icon is still present, then it has
been saved in normal.dot - you should be able to use Alt+drag to remove it
from the toolbar. If that doesn't work try double clicking the toolbar area
to open the customize window then drag it off. Failing that you'll have to
rename normal.dot to remove it.

...could also try resetting the toolbar before renaming Normal.dot.
