Following problems with installation of Win XP Pro, I am
left with an irritating action whenever I open Word for
Windows. The screen goes black, then the colour display
changes. It looks as if there has been a change to 256
colours, and the status bar is sort of "skeletal". Other
applications are affected while Word is open.

On closing Word, the reverse happens and the screen
returns to its normal colour display of "Highest (32
bit)" and all is well

Is there a registry entry or something which got messed
up?

Hi YabbieOne,

Sounds to me like a problem with your graphics card driver.
You might check the manufacturer's website for the newest
version, download and install it.

Hello Cindy

I have tried the video card route to no avail.  Thanks.

It has been suggested that the newer version of XP Pro
(now uninstalled) had an option to alter the screen
display(I am presently running FAT32, but the newer
version was NFTS - hope those are correct) for Word.  I
recall seeing something like that but cannot recall where
it was or what I did which caused things to change.  It
only happens with Word; Excel, Access and others fire up
with no changes.

Hello again, Cindy

As with many of these problems, the solution is
ridiculously easy.  I right clicked on the desktop link
to Word, and found that the display in 256 colours box
was checked.  Unchecked it and all was well

Thanks for the response, it encouraged me to keep looking
