Left margin

I've got Office 97 and Win XP.

On a word document that I update regularly, I cannot get to start at the
left margin of 1".

On the ruler line at the top of the page, there's the First Line Indent
marker. Below it is the Hanging Indent, and below it is the Left Indent.
They are all in line vertically about half inch to the right of the Left
Tab. To the right of the three markers in line there is a grey bar about one
inch in horizontal length. Whenever I start a new line it starts at the
right hand end of this grey bar, which is too far out. I have not been able
to remove or reduce this grey bar and I don't know what it is.

On other word documents this grey bar is not there. How can I remove it in
this document, and be able to start at the left margin?

Hi Ben

The grey bar may be indicating that you have set up the document, or one
section of the document, in columns.

If columns are not what you want, Format > Columns and choose 1.

Thanks for your help. In Format>Columns, 1 was as default so I left it as it
is. The problem remains. Whenever I open the document it opens about two
inches to the right at the RHS of the grey bar. The first one inch of the
document would not be visible. But after I scroll it to the left it would be
OK. I got no problems in typing, but if I copy and paste a line or para on
to it, it would be pasted another one inch to the right, which is the RHS of
the grey bar. Hope you have another fix.
