I'm sure the answer to this one is obvious. I've just
upgraded from Word 97 to Word 2000, but I can't figure out
what has happened to my normal template. In 97 my Normal
was in C/Programme Files/Microsoft Office/Templates, and
in 2000 it appears to be in C/Windows/Application
Data/...etc, but no matter where I locate it using
Tools/Options/File Locations, when I create a new blank
document I get something with 10 point Times New Roman
instead of the 11 point Univers in my Normal template. I
have checked and double checked that the Normal template
(I have a copy in each location mentioned - does this
matter?) is written using Univers (opening it via Explorer
and then Format/Font, clicking on Default...button and
answering yes to the question about altering the Global
template), yet this pesky Times New Roman document keeps
appearing. Most (but not all) of my customised buttons
have disappeared as well. I see from the useful Word MPV
site that 10 point TNR is default font in 97 but not in
2000, so have I got some kind of a leftover from 97? All
comments appreciated.

You should only have one normal.dot and it should be in the folder indicated
in tools > options > file locations > user templates.
If you upgrade a working Word 97 system, the normal.dot file will be moved
to the required location. If normal.dot does not exist in the required
location starting Word will create a new default one.
If you can open your modified normal.dot template, then rename it
oldnormal.dot and simply use the organiser (tools > macro > macros >
organizer) to move your styles etc from that template to the new one.

Hi Simon
If this were me, I'd proceed as follows.
1. Close Word.
2. Use Windows Explorer to find all normal.dots. For each normal.dot you
find:
(1) re-name it to OldNormal.dot
(b) double-click (we're in Windows Explorer, right?) the file name. Word
will open and create a new document based on this OldNormal.dot. Have a look
at it. Is this something you want to keep? Are there bits of it you want to
keep? Styles? Toolbars? Macros? Make a note on some paper about what you
want to keep from this particular OldNormal.dot.
3. Do a last check to see that there is no file called normal.dot on your
machine.
4. Open Word. Tools > Options > Save. Tick the box that says "Prompt to save
Normal Template". Word will have created a new normal.dot for you. So you
can expect that, when you exit Word, it will ask if you want to save
normal.dot. So saying yes would be a good idea. (Word will have saved the
new normal.dot in the folder shown at Tools > Options > File Locations.)
5. Tools > Templates and Add-ins > Organizer. Using the information on the
paper notes you wrote, copy whatever you needed to keep from the
OldNormal.dots to the new normal.dot.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for that. I'll give it a try.
