Click on the ¶ button on the Standard toolbar near the top of your screen.

Ctrl+* or the Show/Hide ¶ button on the Standard toolbar. But see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/NonPrintChars.htm for some times when
you might want to be able to see them.

you need to turn off your show/hide key, which looks like
a backwards P on your standard tool bar.
