I cannot get the Line count to display in Word 2002.  It
is grayed out and not working.  Please help.

When you're in Normal view, you have to have the Background Repagination
option checked in Tools > Options > General in order to get line numbers in
the status bar. When you're in Page Layout view, that option is checked and
grayed out. When you're in Normal view it's enabled and may be unchecked
(although checked is the default).
