Hi Keith,
Despite appearances, those palettes are different kinds of objects. If you
don't see the little bar that serves as a handle, you can't float the
dropdown.
But you can make a whole new toolbar (Tools > Customize > Toolbars > New)
and then Ctrl+drag a copy of the highlighter button onto it. That little
toolbar can then float or dock. It's still a two-click job to change the
color, but at least it will be closer to hand.

Thanks for the info.
And what a drag. Seems that whoever had a role in programming that part of
word fell asleep 1/2 way through the job. How silly to be able to float the
text color but not the highlight color. Hmmm.
Obviously the idea here is that if one is highlighting different parts of a
document with different colors, it's nice to be able to just click the
highlight color once and not have to do the whole drop down thing.

To make a feature request, email mswish@microsoft.com, or post a Suggestion
in the web interface to the newsgroups, if you see that option.
If you use the same colors over and over again, you can link a short macro
to an icon or key command. Recording the macro should work fine. See, if
necessary:

Macro is a good suggestion. Thanks, I appreciate that. :)
