Excellent your pointer to the 'how to' sheet worked and I now have the
standard buttons back - corrupt registry. Note: the use of winword.exe /a did
not want to work with my ver (using XP and Office 2000 Word was ver 9). Hence
used the edit in registry to delete the corrupt file. And as it said:

The /a switch is will work in Word 97 - Word 2003. It could be you
omitted the space before the forward slash or you needed to provide
the full path to winword.exe. For example:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office" /a
In any case, glad to hear you have the problem resolved.
