Running Office 2000 in XP Pro SP2

Had prior problem not having custom toolbars & macros showing on new
computer, even though I had copied Normal.dot over to new computer from
old computer running WIN 98SE, after a fresh install of Office 2000.
Did a search on new computer & it only had 1 normal.dot file located at
- C:\Documents and Settings\Douglas A. Boufford\Application
Data\Microsoft\Templates\Normal.dot
I then copied that normal.dot to - E:\Microsoft
Office\Office\Startup\Normal.dot. After that copy, my custom toolbars
and macros are showing in Word.
If I do Tools\Macros and look in the "macros in:" field at the bottom of
that screen, there are 2 "Normal.dot (global template)" showing up. One
has my macros listed in it, while the other has NO macros listed in it.

Now I'm really getting confused................

Any hints would appreciated

Putting normal.dot into a startup folder (office or word) causes you to have
two normal.dots loaded at the same time. This is not good. You might rename
your old normal.dot to something else and strip out the AutoText that
usually comes with it.

I don't store my toolbars, autotext, or other customizations in normal.dot
as a rule. I use one or more additional global templates (in the startup
folder). See http://addbalance.com/word/movetotemplate.htm for step-by-step
instructions on moving / sharing / copying / backing-up customizations
including AutoText, AutoCorrect, keyboard assignments, toolbars, macros,
etc.

Charles

Before I start on the above -------I don't understand why if the
normal.dot is in "C:\Documents and Settings\Douglas A.
Boufford\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates\" folder, then I start
Word - there are NO macros nor custom toolbars available. Once I place a
COPY of that normal.dot in "E:\Microsoft Office\Office\Startup\", the
macros & custom tollbars show up in Word. I hear what you are saying
about having 2 copies of normal.dot running, but this is the only way to
see the macros & custom toolbars. (This is a copy of normal.dot that is
working fine in WIN 98SE)
When I open up MS VB & look in the project window, there are 2 Normal
projects there (natch). The 1st Normal will not expand & I get the
message "Project is unviewable". When I look at Tools\macros, all of my
macros are there. The 2nd Normal will expand, but there are no macros
there.
Before I start creating a global template per the great instuctions on
the web site, I have to make sure that I can get to my Normal.dot to get
the macros

Thanks

Is the folder where Normal.dot is stored the folder selected for "User
templates" on the File Locations tab of Tools | Options?

NO - should it be. User templates folder is set as "E:\Microsoft
Office\Templates" - could that be the problem???

Absolutely. The active normal.dot is the one contained in the folder
indicated at 'user templates'. The one at C:\Documents and Settings\Douglas
A. Boufford\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates is not seen by Word. Move
it to the E drive folder and replace the default normal.dot - the one
without the macros - there. Or do as Charles suggested and rename the one in
the startup folder to avoid confusion.

THANK you Suzanne, Charles & Graham. I have now set up a separate global
temp (DAB.dot) with my customizations (& copied it to another location
for backup)

All is working great.

I appreciate the help

Normal1.dot = the version that is in your startup folder.
Normal2.dot = the version in your templates folder.

Normally macros in Normal1.dot will be available during your Word session as
with macros from any global template. You will not be able to view these in
the visual basic editor unless you actually open the template or create a
document based on it. This is normal behavior for a template in the Startup
folder.
