Is it possible to create a custom menu item that links directly to a
specific autotext item?

I have created an autotext entry for scientific equations and would like to
have a direct menu link to allow inserting this if possible.

Yes, when building your custom menu (on a custom toolbar by preference) one
of the things that can be put on a toolbar is AutoText (left window) by
dragging the specific entry (right window) to your custom menu. See
http://addbalance.com/word/movetotemplate.htm for step-by-step instructions
on moving / sharing / copying / backing-up customizations including
AutoText, AutoCorrect, keyboard assignments, toolbars, macros, etc. This
includes the reasons why I recommend building your custom menu on a custom
toolbar (even if you want to use it on a built-in toolbar).
