I am able to create a custom toolbar in 2003.  Once I close the application,
then restart it, the toolbar is gone, and needs to be recreated.  I've tried
it as both Power User and enterprise admin.  Same result.  Help!

From the FAQ:
28. I can't save my customizations - AutoText, menus, etc.
   Can't save normal.dot...
If you have Adobe Acrobat 7 installed see the last section of
   http://www.gmayor.com/lose_that_adobe_acrobat_toolbar.htm.
Otherwise, hold down the Shift key when selecting the File
   menu and select Save All.

I am having the same problem.  It started about the 18th after computer
downloaded an update for Windows.  Can somebody please tell us how to repair
whatever Microsoft has done to our Word.  My old macros and icons are working
fine but it will not allow me to create and then hold a new one.

Yes, I spent three hours on Friday after work trying to resolve this issue
with my computer.  The articles assume that the software is working as it
should. I have added macros to my computer using the "record" and then adding
to tool bar for several years and it works just fine.  As late as two weeks
ago it worked.  As of 8/18 after some sort of update it does not.  I read, I
fussed, I swore a little and then I posted a help me!  The answer has to lie
somewhere in the update that my computer autodownloaded last week.

If it was an update that caused the problem, rolling back the PC to before
the 18th would fix it, but I doubt that it is anything to do with an update.
The most common cause of Word being unable to save normal.dot and thus the
toolbar and macro customisations is adverse interference from an add-in. The
one that is causing most people problems is the add-in from Adobe's Acrobat
7 which was mentioned along with a link for a workaround early on in the
thread.
