When I choose FILE/OPEN I can't use any of the buttons at the top without
locking up the program.  The only option I have is to chose the MY COMPUTER
button on the side.  I've run Detect & Repair twice and nothing changes.

Any clues?

Thanks.

Take a look at the steps shown here. They usually resolve the kinds of
issues you're having:

The site mentions uninstalling Word but doesn't say how.

The real problem occurs after Word is open and I click on File/Open.  The
"Look in:" window comes up usually with "My Documents" in it.  If I click on
the arrow to change the folder I won't to see it locks up, eventually saying
Open is not responding and I have to do an "End Now" shutdown of Word.  The
only way I can navigate to documents is with the folders on the left of the
Open window and the back button on the tool bar.

I hope that explains it better.

Right-click on the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop,
left-click on Disconnect Network Drive, and disconnect any mapped
drives that are not currently available.
