If you rename your Normal.dot template to NormalOLD.dot, then start Word, does
the problem go away?
If it persists, START/run and type: winword.exe /a
Then press ENTER (or click Run). Word should open in SAFE MODE with the factory
defaults (means it will look odd). Can you use the File menu now?

Hi Cindy.
1. I did a search for Normal.dot but cannot find it on my PC. I uninstalled
and reinstalled Word but still Normal.dot is not there.
2. I tried the winword.exe /a and it did let me open and use Word and save a
document. But when I tried to reopen it, I got the same "Microsoft Word has
encountered a problem and nneds to close..." message.
Any idea of how I can get a Normal.dot file?
Thanks,
Flipper

You almost certainly do have a normal.dot file. You just can't find it.
See method 1 in the following article:
From the FAQ:
28. My blank document has text in it - an old letter, etc. See
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/BlankDocNotBlank.htm.
