leaha21 - 06 Apr 2006 11:59 GMT I use Word 2000 and the ctrl-b short cut and the Bold button on the toolbar no longer work. They work in Excel. Tried assigning other keys for this short cut, but they do not work any longer. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Herb Tyson [MVP] - 07 Apr 2006 04:13 GMT Do the other buttons in Word, for italics and underlining, still work? Or have they stopped working as well?
You might try the steps shown here:

Will try uninstalling and installing word to see if this helps. Thanks.

Does anyone know how to fix this? Suzanne S. Barnhill - 08 Apr 2006 15:35 GMT Uninstalling/reinstalling is very unlikely to make any difference since it won't overwrite Normal.dot or your Registry entries. I would suggest instead that you:
1. Open Tools | Customize and click Keyboard...
2. In the Format category, select Bold and make sure that Ctrl+B is still assigned as the shortcut. If it is not, assign it.
3. If it is, select any other command and try to assign Ctrl+B as the shortcut; you'll get information about what command Ctrl+B is assigned to. If this is anything other than Bold, then you need to unassign it from the other command.

Does anyone know how to fix this? leaha21 - 08 Apr 2006 18:43 GMT I have tried assigning, un-assigning, re-assigning ctrl-b for bold as well as other key combinations. NOTHING WORKS. Also the B button in the toolbar at the top does not work. If I click on it, it stays down, but as soon as I type, it automatically comes up. If I have highlighted words, the button cannot be selected. I have assigned some other font change to ctrl-b. nothing works.

Barnhill - 08 Apr 2006 19:09 GMT If the text were not *printing* bold, I would say that either the font didn't have a bold variant or the variant was missing or damaged, but usually Word will display text as bolded even without a bold variant; it just doesn't print any differently. Is the document protected in any way?

I have been using this document/template for months and months. Have changed nothing and it just all of a sudden stopped allow bold unless I use the menu. Then it will toggle the bold on and off, but only using the menu. Just cannot use shortcut or toolbar button.
If you can tell me about variant and protected and how to check for this, I will try.

Does anyone know how to fix > > > this? Suzanne S. Barnhill - 08 Apr 2006 21:48 GMT As I said, I don't think the bold variant is relevant here, but you do realize that in addition to Times New Roman, you also have installed TNR Bold, Italic, and Bold Italic? These variants are used by Word when you apply bold, italic, or bold and italic formatting.
If the Tools menu shows Unprotect Document, then the document is protected. If it shows Protect Document, then that's not the issue.
What almost certainly *is* the issue, given the further information you have provided, is that the document is corrupt. See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/CorruptDoc.htm

So thank you for that. However, I am having troubles keeping the macros that I create. The one is easy to recreate, the other is fairly big. Only suggestions or should I start another thread.
Thanks for your help in my bold problem.

Charles Kenyon - 09 Apr 2006 00:06 GMT If you renamed your normal.dot, you can copy the macro from the old one to the new using the vba Editor or the Organizer. See http://addbalance.com/word/movetotemplate.htm for step-by-step instructions on moving / sharing / copying / backing-up customizations including AutoText, AutoCorrect, keyboard assignments, toolbars, macros, etc.

I got my old macros back and redid my toolbars and made my shortcut keys, now the ctrl-b problem is back. Could it have anything to do with add/deleting buttons on the toolbars, or the macros that I created and got from my old file?

Deleted it, ctrl b works. Thanks, got me thinking and solving some of my own problems.
