Formatting Fractions in Word 2003

I am trying to format fractions in Word 2003. I write a lot of
technical/historical documents and I deal in numerous non-standard
fractions. The usual 1/2, 3/4, etc, Word formats nicely but when it
comes to 17/64, 27/32, etc, I just can't get them to appear the same
as the common ones. I have tried fiddling with Auto Format settings to
no avail. Does anyone know of a solution? TIA

1. Type your fraction using the forward slash between the numerator (top) and
the denominator (bottom). For example -- 12/15

2. Highlight the numerator and apply superscript formatting.

3. Highlight the denominator and apply subscript formatting.

Hi Gary -

Suzanne's reference to the article quite the way to go if you need to do _a_
fraction in an occasional doc. Since you indicate the need to do this
repeatedly - and perhaps randomly - be prepared for what you will get even
if you follow instructions to the proverbial letter & then some.

If you intend to do this in Word for *some* (the unusual) fractions be
prepared to do so for *all* - even the traditional 1/2 or 1/4 - especially
if you need to use multiple flavors of fractions on the same page or even in
the same document. The subscript/superscript technique *does not* render the
same character size as the 'stock' fractions, nor does the '/' conform to
the same angle... You'll need to use a special character such as 'Ž' Also,
the denominators of the custom fractions will sit below the baseline of the
other text, the numerators raised above the height of other characters -
all-in-all quite unsightly for professional output. Even though there is
some 'tweaking' you can do (such as raising/lowering chars, changing font
size, etc.), you'll possibly find that you do more of that than anything
else. Word simply doesn't have the typography tools you need.

IMHO, you'd be wiser to spend the time googling for "fraction font", finding
what satisfies your need the best & paying the price... Either that or turn
the AutoFormat feature *off* so all your fractions will be consistent - even
if not as attractive as you would like.

FWIW, note that my article says (about fractions created with superscript
and subscript):

Fractions created in this way may need some tweaking to look their best
(experiment with the Spacing and Position settings on the Character Spacing
tab of Format | Font). If you'll be using specific ones frequently, you'll
want to save them as AutoCorrect entries. Also, it is best not to call
attention to their failings by mixing them with the built-in font
characters. If you will be using this method to create fractions for 1/6 and
1/9, say, do it for 1/4, 1/8, and so on as well so that all the fractions in
your document will be uniform.
