Hi all - Using Word 2002 ---- I am trying to set up an icon on the Standard
Toolbar to be able to open the Template Dialog Box. By that I mean the Dialog
box that appears when you click on New ... Other ....., but only when it is
set as an Icon on one of the Toolbars. I don't want the Task Pane appearing
which is what happens when you choose File/New/Other.
I went to set up a macro but could only find      New Blank Doc / New Web
Page and New E-mail.  I tried to create the macro by clicking on the New....
Icon and then on Other...  but found I could not then stop the Macro Recorder
unless I cancelled the Dialog Box - defeating the whole purpose. I vaguely
remenber in the dim dark dephs of the past that there was some way of
stopping a macro in this situation. Can't find anything though. Any ideas.
Why is the one and only item I want NOT THERE. Thanks for any input..

Yours ---- Dika

The command you are looking for is FileNewDialog. By default it will be
labeled Other... and has no icon; you'll have to assign one. For more, see

Suzanne - I wrote too soon. I would not say many many thanks but instead a
million and one thanks! First your reply was clear, concise and timley. Then
having kicked myself about forgetting All Commands and getting the Icon set I
read your attached documents. Quite brilliant. Again, clear and concise. I
shall show my Word users the link to your site and encourage them to read and
learn. And I can now play with yet more icons.

Again --- a million and one thanks.

I'm glad I was able to help. At least there IS a way to put Word 2002/2003
"back the way it was." When we all get to Word 2007, I don't know what we'll
do!

Hi Suzanne,

The method for resetting Word 2007 back to its default is fairly similar to doing it for prior versions.  A couple of differences in
file names/types and registry entry naming.

You misunderstood me. My reference to "putting it back the way it was" was
to my article at http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/CustomizingWord2002.htm,
which had helped the OP. This article explains how to customize Word 2002 to
work/look like Word 2000. There will not be any way to make Word 2007 work
like Word 2003, as MS has been very clear that there is no "classic view."

Hi Suzanne - well, I'll leave that all to you youngsters cause after a little
over 25 years of micros, Microsoft and mice I am retiring in 2 months! It
used to be so easy not only to understand but also to explain to users, now
it just gets more and more complicated. But I will miss it.

Thanks again --- Dika

FWIW, the Word 2007 UI should make it much easier for new users to learn how
to use Word, as the goal of the new UI was to make features more
discoverable. It will be a pain only to experienced Word users (especially
"power users" who are accustomed to customizing their UI).

Yes; and to do that, I need to get rid of the Adobe Toolbar.  Because
it's preventing me from saving any customizations in Word.
Arggggggggggggh!

It is not preventing you from saving customizations; it's preventing
Normal.dot from being saved when you quit Word. But you can explicitly save
Normal.dot by pressing Shift when you select the File menu and choosing Save
All on that menu.
