Word XP -- no macros???

<*(((>< - 06 Aug 2006 05:12 GMT I've got Macros trouble. I'm using Word XP on XP Home SP2. The about dialog box says I'm using MS Word 2000 v10.2627.2625.
I can't create macros. I can go through the steps, but the macros don't save and so I can't run them after I create them. Once I saw a dialog box saying I need to change my macro security settings.
I have macros from Adobe on my toolbar. How do I get rid of those?
Thanks in advance!

Jay Freedman - 06 Aug 2006 12:43 GMT I think Adobe is the clue and the culprit. Not only is it putting buttons on your toolbar, but it's probably preventing you from saving anything at all -- not just macros -- in the Normal.dot template.
See http://www.gmayor.com/lose_that_adobe_acrobat_toolbar.htm, especially the last section.
By the by, there something confusing in your description of the About box. The version number (v10) is correct for Office XP, but it probably says Word 2002, not Word 2000. Sometimes these little differences can be important.

I used Word 2000 for so long I guess I forgot to update myeslf.
Adobe just does not play nice with others, does it? I'll get rid of that dang thing. And yes, *something* is preventing me from saving any customizations. Hope to get this straightened away before school starts again in two weeks.
I appreciate your help, and especially the vital link.

I opened a new document based on the ZapAdobe dot and ran the macro. No joy.
I have Adobe Acrobat v6 -- the full pdf writer. I don't know what to do next.
I want to get the icons off the toolbar. (It's okay if they stay under a menu command). And I want to be able to write macros and customize word and having the settings stick.
Plan B?

Sometimes these little >differences can be important. Jay Freedman - 07 Aug 2006 15:00 GMT As I've never owned Adobe Acrobat of any version, I can't test this, but it should do:
1. Shut down Word. 2. Move the Adobe add-in file from your Startup folder to anywhere else. (My understanding is that in v6, Acrobat was still using a .dot file add-in rather than a COM add-in.) 3. Rename Normal.dot to OldNormal.dot. 4. Restart Word, which will create a new Normal.dot with no customizations. 5. Use the Organizer (Tools > Templates & Add-Ins > Organizer) to copy your customizations -- at least, any that were already saved -- from OldNormal.dot to Normal.dot. 6. Start adding your new macros and other customizations.
Someone with real knowledge of Acrobat, such as Graham Mayor, may be able to tell you more about safely restoring the add-in. Until then, keeping the add-in out of the Startup folder will prevent it from loading automatically and degrading your setup.

I've tried to move the plug-in icons off the toolbar and into the "Window" Menu list. When I reopen word, the plugins are right back on their very own toolbar again.
Do you know of anybody else who could help?
Thank you.

Read through it thoroughly and try the various suggestions. And no, I can't because I've never had Adobe Acrobat installed. Graham Mayor may be able to, though.

> Hi Charles -- > [quoted text clipped - 8 lines] >> >>Hope this helps, Margaret Aldis - 11 Aug 2006 15:20 GMT If the problem is the one where Adobe marks Normal.dot (after it's messed with it) as "clean" so it doesn't save, then the answer is that you have to save explicitly. When you've recorded a macro, why not use the Visual Basic Editor (Alt F11) to check that the code is there in Normal, and then save from there? You can also force a save by holding down Shift as you select the File menu and selecting "Save All".
For general info, the latest fixes to Acrobat 7 have finally resolved the problem.

I think I almost understand what you're suggesting. I don't want to use Visual Basic every time I record a macro or make a customization to a toolbar, or change a default font, etc. I want to get rid of the Adobe Toolbar that has been following me around since I installed Adobe 6.0.
I read Graham Mayor's link over and over and tried the suggestions. But I have not had any success.
Can I do something else to get rid of the darn toolbar?
Thanks.
PS: Charles -- if you don't use Adobe, what DO you use when you send documents online? Don't you worry about Metadata? And don't you need to file some PDF's with Court?

In C:\Program Files\Adobe ~~~ there is a folder called \PDF Maker\. Inside that folder there is PDFMaker.dot and a PDFMaker.xla. There is also a subfolder called \Office\ that has PDFMakerA.dot inside it.
Could these folders and *.dot files have anything to do with my inability to kill off the Adobe Toolbar?
Charles Kenyon - 14 Aug 2006 23:51 GMT Yes.

Or is there a registry hack I can use to prevent them from loading?
NOTE: I don't really want to be customizing the Normal.dot. I want to create my own Global.dot and save alll my customizations there, and then develop other templates off of that. So far I have not been able to kill the Adobe toolbar. So I can't create and save and update a Global.dot. I can't create and save macros or customizations. I can't rearrange the default toolbar so that when I click the NewDoc icon, a new Global-based document comes up.
I'm in my 50's, my third year starts up next week, both my computers crashed, this is my new laptop, the dryer is broken, and the car needs to be cleaned.
Can you help me?

[quoted text clipped - 29 lines] >>> Could these folders and *.dot files have anything to do with my >>> inability to kill off the Adobe Toolbar? Dummy - 17 Aug 2006 14:56 GMT Here's my solution, for what it's worth:
A. To save your customizations and macros/procedures
1. Open a new Word document. 2. Do all the customizations you want and add all the macros/procedures you want. 3. Save the document as a template (e.g., MyNormal.dot) and save it in the Word Startup folder. 4. Close Word. 5. Go to Windows Explorer, locate your old Normal.dot, and delete it. 6. Reopen Word. A new document will open, and all your customizations and macros/procedures will be available.
B. To eliminate the Adobe Acrobat toolbar
I don't have Acrobat v.6, but it seems to me that the toolbar should be listed in the list of Toolbars in the View menu. Try this:
1. Open Word. 2. Go to View > Toolbars. 3. Uncheck the entry that refers to Acrobat (with Acrobat v.7, the entry is PDFMaker 7.0). 4. Close Word. Next time you open Word, the toolbar shouldn't be there, but you should be able to bring it back through the View menu.
C. About Acrobat v.7
To eliminate the Acrobat toolbar and the menus, either modify the LoadBehavior value in the registry, as suggested by Graham Mayor (http://www.gmayor.com/lose_that_adobe_acrobat_toolbar.htm), or download the latest Acrobat updates, as mentioned by Margaret Aldis, who says also that the bugs have been fixed. Since I don't have broadband and I have to pay for my "connect time," I didn't download the updates. On the other hand, Graham's method works well. With this method, however, you can't bring the toolbar and menus unless you modify the LoadBehavior value again. I suppose that Graham's method would work also for the other Office programs, but I didn't try it.

I don't want to add more macros, add security warnings, load the toolbar somewhere else, or anything like that. I want to KILL THAT TOOLBAR. It isnt just in Word. Its in Outlook and everywhere.
I can't find any Adobe add ins anywhere on my computer. When I look under installed templated, etc., Word shows nothing. Please help.
> Have you read http://www.gmayor.com/lose_that_adobe_acrobat_toolbar.htm > [quoted text clipped - 19 lines] > but >> >>you should be able to bring it back through the View menu. Graham Mayor - 17 Dec 2006 05:41 GMT Clearly you haven't read it all! :(
If you cannot see the add-ins in the start-up folder then you presumably have Acrobat 7 or 8 which don't use them. if you don't want the toolbars (and if you don't, why pay so much for an Acrobat conversion tool that you cannot use fully from Word) then I believe you get the option not to install them in setup. The whole point of the toolbars is that they access macros that provide the full functionality of Acrobat. The web page explains how to control the bars or remove them from Word only.
The toolbars in Outlook are installed by a dll file and you must unregister that for them not to appear there.
Try searching your hard drive for that dll - PDFMOutlook.dll - and unregister it by running the following command line from Windows > Start > Run The default path is shown in the command line below. Change the path if it is somewhere different on your PC.
regsvr32 /u "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\PDFMaker\Mail\Outlook\PDFMOutlook.dll"
Restart Windows.
