FWIW, suppressing the splash screen doesn't make Word load any faster. But I
would imagine you would need to add the /q switch to the path in Tools |
Folder Options | File Type: DOC | Advanced | Open | Edit.

Thanks. Worked a treat once I realised you were talking about
explorer stuff! I wasn't expecting any speed-up....I just didn't like the
splash screen.

Sorry. By the time I'd drilled down to get the path from Tools | Folder
Options, I forgot to mention Windows Explorer!

In Windows Explorer, Tools/Folder options/File Types.
Locate DOC and select it. Click "Advanced", then choose an entry (Open). Click
Edit. Add the /q switch to the command line under "Application used to perform
action"
