I have created a Word template (.dot), and when I double-click it to
open a copy, I receive the following message:

"There is insufficient memory or disk space. Close extra windows and
save your work."

Is there anything I may be doing wrong?

What happens if you select New from the File menu and then select your
template as the basis for the document that is to be created?

Is there any vba code (macros) in your template?

Yes, I still get the same message when I open the template by selecting
New from the File menu and opening the template.

I am starting to think that I'm creating the templates wrong. I might
have just saved a Word doc as a template, rather than opening a
template and choosing Save As.

I also usually save the templates to my desktop and continually work on
them. To open the template, I right-click and select Open, and it
always works. But when I double-click the file, it doesn't work.

Double clicking on a template amounts to the same as using File>New to
create a new document from the template.  If that gives and error, it would
seem to indicate that there is someproblem with the code in an AutoNew()
macro in the template
