When I navigate through a document using the arrow keys or select a section
of text which includes a table or image, word selects a menu item (‘File’,
‘Edit’, ‘View’, etc.) so that I can no longer navigate or type text until I
click back on the text such that it deselects the menu item.

I also get a problem when I minimise word and come back to the document
after using another program, word opens a menu item (Usually the ‘Table’ menu
item) and it will not close until I select another menu item then click on
the opened menu item several times until it decides to close. If I do not do
this and simply close word, the menu item remains on my desktop and will not
close until I close outlook.

I have been having this problem for a while and it is rather annoying. I
have tried uninstalling and then re-installing office and it did not solve
the issue. I have checked that there are no macros running and that there is
no extra add-ins or templates installed.

It would be greatly appreciated if anyone could help me resolve this issue,

Thanks

G'Day Alex,

You are likely pressing the ALT key accidentally - that will give the
symptoms you describe.

Press ESC to cancel it.
