In Word 2003, with the Styles and Formatting sidebar open and "Available
Formatting" selected I have several styles that I want to delete that are
not being used and won't be used in my doc.  When I select the style I get
the usual pop-open screen and I click Delete... no problem. But I notice
there is a grayed out option to "Select all styles: not currently used".
What is that option, when it is beneficial and in what circumstances would
it be available to me (i.e. ungreyed out)?

Select All is available only if you have "Keep track of formatting" checked
on the Edit tab of Tools | Options.
