When I click the insert table button on the Standard Toolbar, I am now
getting the insert table dialog box rather than the shortcut window where i
can select rows & columns. How did this happen, and how can I fix it?

I can't tell you how it happened, but it seems to happen to a lot of users.
You need to swap out the current button with one that will give you the
result you want. The command you want is listed under All Commands in Tools
| Customize as TableInsertGeneral. If you don't know how to use Tools |
Customize to add/remove a toolbar button, see
