Maybe it was the virus scan (Avast) yesterday that showed a virus or two,
and they were handled as directed. This is not uncommon. It has happened
before with no effects on the computer.

But today I could not access my XP Office Word files. The pop-ups indicate
that the system is trying to install windows. It cannot, and then tells me
to install Word.

Tried System Restore, but it doesn't work either. My system cannot be
restored. I need help.
TIA

I would appreciate a reply from someone. I need help on how I can access my
WORD files again.
Thanks

It is impossible to tell at this distance what damage has been done by the
virus activity and the action of the AV software in controlling that. If
system files have been affected then it is entirely possible that your
office installation (or worse) is corrupt.

You say that the system is trying to install *Windows*? You need to search
the *exact wording* of the error message and if necessary ask about the
problem in a Windows forum dedicated to your flavour of the operating
system. If the Office installation is corrupt, you should reinstall it from
the original installation CD.

If the damage is really bad, you may have no alternative but to save your
salvageable data and reinstall Windows and your applications. If that
becomes necessary, you should take the opportunity to re-appraise your
system security and habits to ensure that the chances of such virus
infection are minimised.

Nothing else seems to be wrong. I have no problems accessing my usual
websites and Outlook Express. It seems only the MS Office or WORD is gone. I
say that because I only use WORD of the Office suite.
When I click on My Documents or the specific Word folder in my Quick Lauch,
I see all the usual and my created folders and Word files. But I cannot
access them. When I try to access, the pop-up says trying to install Word,
and then says that Word is not present. I can also access the My Music
Folder which is in My Documents.

Did you try reinstalling/repairing Office *from the original Office CD*?

I have not done that as I've never done it before, so I'm rather
apprehensive as I am not that good on computers. Would appreciate your
advise on simple steps to follow.
Thanks

Locate the Office installation disc and its packaging which includes the
installation key number.
Put the disc in the drive and it should autorun (if not run setup from the
disc). At the choices choose repair or reinstall. Try repair first! This
then uses the installer on the disc rather than the one on your hard drive
to repair the installation. If prompted enter the installation key number.

Hi,

Why not try Advanced Word Repair at http://www.datanumen.com/awr/ ?
It recovers several important Word documents for me and is really
helpful!

Anyway I've got WORD back this time as above. Maybe I'll try it next time I
have problems. But it is not one of those free ones, and it is going to cost
quite a bit.
